The Skincare Product That Changed Everything (Not Sponsored)

If you have been following me on Instagram (and if you haven’t nows a good time to start!), you’ll know I’m pretty much OBSESSED with my BHA. Paula’s Choice SKIN PERFECTING 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, to be precise. So you want to know why…

I will tell you, but first let me tell you about Paula Begoun and her skincare line that is Paula’s Choice…

I started working for the brand over two years ago and fell in love with the scientific-backed formulas. Paula and her team have spent twenty-four years bring truth to the beauty industry. Paula’s Choice Skincare was the world’s first brand (and still is, I think) to recommend other beauty products. Yep, you read correctly.

Though she had an ample collection of products for every skin type and concern, she continued to populate her beauty review website, Beautypedia.com. Here she would review brands as a whole and share unbiased product reviews, all of which were backed up by scientific research. Of course, Paula wanted to sell her beauty products, but the forefront of her career has always been telling the truth about ingredients and skincare.

I’ve worked with near 60 or so beauty brands in the past two and a half years, and each of them touches me in a different way.  However, Paula’s message and the value she has brought to me personally has resonated so much deeper than most.

Let’s get into the product review…

It’s very simple, really. When you don’t exfoliate your skin, it becomes dull, dry and congested when dead skin cells build up on its surface. The solution? Exfoliation!

BUT, not the scrubbing, beady exfoliating gel you might have used in the past. (These products cause micro-tears in the skin, yikes). We’re talking about an acid, leave-on exfoliant, beta hydroxy acid (BHA, also known as salicylic acid). This ingredient mimics the natural exfoliation process of younger skin by helping it shed extra layers and unclogging and clearing pores at the same time. BHA works uppermost layers of the skin and loosens the bonds of the dead surface layers, revealing glassy, glowing skin. In addition, BHA also gets to work deeper inside the pore to remove sebum and dirt. The result? Help with hydration reducing fine lines, improving the texture and tone of your skin…the list goes on.

Though the market may be flooded with many BHA style products, it’s important to note that by not adding in additional exfoliating ingredients and ensuring an optimal PH balance in the formula itself, Paula’s Choice Skincare has created a ‘safe for sensitive skin’ BHA which is what makes it so popular. It’s no wonder this product sells itself really.

So, how do you use it?

This product is ideal for all skin types, especially those who have acne or oily skin. Apply once or twice daily after you cleanse, using a cotton pad (I use my fingers though!) Avoid your eyes and do not rinse.

Results?

You’ll probably see a difference in the first day of using it which is what makes it so magical. Keep using it a couple of days in a row and you’ll notice a glassy look to your skin.

Similar products…

And why are we not buying the Insta-famous Glossier Solution Exfoliating Skin Perfector? Well, this solution contains a high amount of sodium hydroxide, which is not good for sensitive skin. What’s worse is that Glossier also included fragrance and as Paula says herself, “fragrance isn’t skin care”, in fact, it’s a skin irritant. If you read Paula’s review on this product, you’ll also learn that it has an acidic component of vinegar…weird.

Oh, and The Ordinary also have an AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution product but Paula doesn’t rate it high. With a whopping 30% of AHA (this exfoliates the top layer of your skin), this can have an irritating effect on your skin. The Ordinary do recommend removing this ‘mask’ on for 10 minutes on your skin, which is good because any longer and this skincare product could wreak havoc on your skin.
